I’ve been meaning to post this picture for a while. Not long ago, I was walking down the street in my hometown in Spain when I saw this small poster stuck to an advertising display.
For the non Spanish-speaking, the poster says: “Who are these people?” “No. I want a normal family.” Then the web address of the National Alliance and their slogan “Defending the family”. The National Alliance, you might have guessed, are a fascist, racist, homophobic political party.
So yes, Spain may have same-sex marriage and allow gay adoption, but it also has a political party that actually spends money producing these images and sticking them to our walls for everyone to see. Alas we’re not their only target. In fact anyone who isn’t white, catholic, and born in Spain is a target for them. Thankfully they are a minority and as far as I know have never won any seats in any local or national elections.

Dear Fernando and Glen,
I'm a Dutch Law student and came across your blog while looking for sources on same sex adoption in England (I'm writing a comparitive study on same sex adoption in the Netherlands and England, if you're interested I can send you a copy when it's done, but it's very law centric, so not really a fun, recreational read).
When I started the research I was quite disappointed with the legislation in both countries, as it still posed quite a lot of obstacles for couples who want to adopt. My biggest fear was that while theoretically the rights to adopt existed, same sex couples were still discriminated against in practice.
Your blog really gave me new hope that things are getting better and that law reform can facilitate social acceptance.
Apart from that, your blog is simply heart warming to read. You both seem to be a lovely couple and I'm sure you'll be wondeful parents. I was so happy to read you got approved and hope you will be matched very soon. Please keep us informer, as I feel many people feel connected to your yourney (the same way I have become).
Hi Natalie,
Thank you for your comment. I'm sure your research will be interesting. We need more publications and all sorts of research to look into gay adoption.
I'm glad to read that my blog has given you hope and thank you for your lovely words. They mean a lot!
Regards
Fernando
